Obviously, you can't expect to include additional glass elements to a lens without any reduction in resulting image quality whatsoever. But after using this alongside another (3rd party) teleconverter, I feel that I can safely conclude that this is the best one on the market for Canon cameras.

I use this teleconverter in conjunction with an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM mounted on a Canon EOS 40D. The multiplier turns this lens into an effective 98-280mm f/4. Autofocus still operates beautifully, and the loss in image quality, especially when stopped down a little further, is almost unnoticeable. You'd really have to get in there to see any problems, and sometimes I can't even do it then.

I have added a couple of images taken with the extender, showing off some of its capabilities.

Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarized and polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. This lens is the tool to get images that jump out at the viewer. As a sports lens I don't know if there is a better solution. It is a lot of weight to pack around, but after one or two games you get used to moving it around. A mono-pod is required for shooting any more than a few shots at a time. Since I purchased this lens it has been attached to my camera exclusively with the exception of one wedding shoot.

I consider this lens indispensible for the photography I do (action and sports). It has paid for itself in photographic sales many times over with images that no other lens can take. I combine it with good camera support (Gitzo 1325) and a Wimberly head. With a 1DMk2 body, we're talking over 15 lbs, and that's not something you want to hand hold. The images at f/2.8 are sharp and contrasty. When I nail a shot, the shallow depth of field is breathtaking. It's ability to stop action and to work in low light is amazing. While this lens is not a pro lens by any means it does absolutely what you will need it to do in a variety of photographic situations and settings. No hand held telephoto lens will ever give you crisp clear shots (a chief complaint made in other reviews of this lens), but a serious photographer using a telephoto lens knows it has to be stabilized with a tripod or monopod to prevent camera shake and fuzzy pictures. For a $200 lens in the 70-300mm range this lens beats its Canon name brand equivalent with ease. Construction of this lens is better than the Canon and the Macro feature is something that the Canon lens lacks. I've used this lens in a variety of situations - sports photography, portrait photography, and landscape/nature photography - and it's never disappointed me. Another thing that impresses me with Sigma is that they include a lens hood and lens case with every lens they sell - Canon won't do that!

Well i got this lens about a month ago, and well im not to happy with it. all of my images come out soft/fuzzy using both auto and manual focus, it does not work well in low light situations, and i dont believe it goes to a true 300mm. I have a vivitar 70-210mm and it zooms in closer that the sigma 28-300mm does, and it produces better quality images. The only good thing about this lens is that it is built sturdy, its heavy, and the macro feature works great. I used this lens to shoot some portraits for a client and had to reshoot all of them with a different lens because of the poor quality the lens produces. I would not recommend this lens. It would be worth while to save the money and buy a canon lens.

Dear interested buyer(s) of this wonderfully presented Canon EF-50mm F1.2L MkII lens. It's most unfortunate to inform you guys out there that this product don't exist at all. I've written an email to Canon USA with query regarding this MkII and got a reply from them, stating that they've only so far produced one version of it. That is, the EF-50mm F1.2L MkI !!!

Though there seems to be a slight difference in the stated specs between the MkI and MkII when it comes to the number of elements and groups in the lens, which made the whole thing even more convincing. Don't believe it at all. Hope this "review" helps! I just can't sit around doing nothing when I know it's not right :)

I, like most people, got this lens when buying a kit. Unlike one review, I found this lens to have excellent optics. While not quite like a Nikon lens, the quality of pictures the lens produces is more than enough for most users. For the past 4 years, I have thouroughly enjoyed using it. Unfortunately, something is not ligning up on the connections between the lens and the camera body and the camera is unable to read/set the aperture on the lens, therebye making it impossible to take pictures. I have used other lenses on the body, and they work fine, so I'm assuming it is a problem with the lens. Consider paying a little more when buying a lens... in the long run, it might save you money.

this a great telephoto for beginner photographers, especially the price.

it is not the highest quality lens on the market, but I have gotten some good shots from it. As with any long lens, you really need to use a tripod for this one. Don't let the f-stop dials fool you, like it did on a previous review i read, there are two f-stop dials. the one furthest from the camera is a dial that changes the f-stop in stops (8, 11, 16, 22, & 32). The second dial closest to the camera (O <---> C which means "open or closed") gives you everything in between, to fine tune your f-setting. pretty versatile for such a inexpensive lens. Anyone that complains about this lens is probably a professional who is used to using $3,000 lenses & therefore has the right. But if your an amateur or a even pro on a budget, go ahead & get this lens. For under a hundred bucks, why not?

First know this: This lens is NOT specifically engineered for any particular camera. Mine was sold with an adapter for K-Mount Pentax, but that is the *only* difference you're going to get.

Reviews for this particular Opteka lens are nearly non-existant, so I figured I'd write one up.

I got mine new online for only $84.95, and I'm glad I didn't pay more. This thing isn't by any means what is described in the product description. It's basically what you'd imagine getting for $100 new. It can't be good, can it?

Well, it depends on what else you've used. Having used much higher quality lenses, it's hard to go backward. I bought this with the ambition of doing a little astrophotography (moon). For this purpose, I guess I can deal with it. And, it only was about $100.

My qualms reside in the quality conrol issues. You can't just rotate the focus to infinity with this if you want infinity, because the markings are off. The aperture ring on my copy seems to be broken: the part that is "snappy" doesn't change the aperture, this loose, unmarked second ring below it does. The whole thing is a little loose where the supplied adapter connects to the camera body. It just feels cheap. Also, it says "Made in Korea" on the lens although it is supposed to be manufactured in Japan.

The T-Mount adapter supplied with mine makes the lens screw on so that the focusing and aperture numbers face the right side of the camera, instead of being in plain sight on top.

So, if you want sharp, crisp images, this isn't your lens. If you're just looking for something to experiment with, this is a pretty cheap way to do it.

Do you ever find your pictures boring? If you do, get this lens, and your pictures will have a whole new dramatic look, becuase of its super wide angle. Another advantage is that a wider angle allows you to take pictures at a slower speed, good for darker occasions, because the shaking of hands would have a smaller effect. The third advantage is compared with most of the other Canon professional lens, this is very small, which makes it easier to use at public places where bigger lens means more attentions, and more attentions means less oppotunities. I didn't say anything about the lens's actual picture quality, because Look, this is a Canon Professional lens(the red ring at the top of the lens indicates professional, instead of regular yellow), there is no question about the quality of the pictures! ( And of course, though wide-angle, the pictures are not twisted at the corners at all.) It's the best you can get out of an SLR! But of course, good equipments is only half of good pictures, you will never be able to take good pictures even with the best lens if you don't learn and don't experience. Good Luck. This lens is for Canon EOS cameras. EF 28-70mm F2.8, EF 70-200mm F2.8, and this lens--EF 17-35mm F2.8, together is one series of professional zooming lens. They all have the same diameter, 77mm. 17-35 is wide angle, 28-70 is midzoom, 70-200 is long distance. I have all of them, and use them on different occations with my EOS 3. All three lens have the same superb quality, but have different uses. If you have all of these three lens, you will be able to take almost any pictures you want, and all the pictures that you take would have a very professional look even if you are an amature, since a good photographer is made up with half the equipment, and half the person.

This is not just my favorite lens, it is one of the nicest things I own.

I love wide-angle photography, and the extra field-of-view I get with a 17mm wide-angle (over a more conventional 28mm) is dramatic. I took this on an extended vacation in Japan and found it to be the only lens I really needed for the entire trip (I also brought my 28-135 IS and my 50 mm f/1.4 but really needn't have). There is something about Japan that really cries out for a super-wide angle (small interiors for one thing). On a more recent trip to Spain I admit there were times I wish I had my 28-135 with me for a little more reach, but this 17-35mm is still my primary lens.

I think the optics on my 50mm 1.4 are noticably better than this lens, but I have become so accustomed to the 17mm view that I find a "normal" focal length practically useless.

There is marvelously little distortion in this lens at 17mm.

It is worth noting however that you will undoubtedly get shadows from even the thinnest filters (I have a very very thing polarizer filter that I use with this lens and even it will crop the image, the lens is so wide.) Also, when I use the built-in flash on my A2E the lens will cast a shadow in the image, which is annoying (a little hard to explain, but the point is that you see so much at 17mm that the lens itself blocks the flash). Someday I will get an external flash to avoid this problem.

"Middle of the road lens..." 2007-12-14

I'll be honest in saying that this lens doesn't absolutely thrill me. But it doesn't disappoint, either. It is a decent lens for the price and an excellent starter lens. I bought this lens when I made the step up to SLR with my 10D. It takes some decent pictures. Not stunningly sharp, yet usable for a number of tasks. I'm not so sure about action shots yet, though. The main test I had with it was a volleyball game my wife was coaching. I rattled off 100 shots with this lens, and got about 15 that I was happy with. I haven't really used it since then based on this. I've learned more things to help my photography in this situation, and I have learned that I probably wasn't using the correct focus drive for the situation. That most likely accounts for the vast majority of shots I didn't care for. Even though I now know this, I somehow associate this lens with my disappointment with those shots. I've since upgraded to an older 70-210 push-pull zoom lens that I like a lot better. I may sell this lens, but I'll give it another shot before I do that. Aside from that, the build quality is good for the price, and it is fairly lightweight for the zoom you get with it. It's not a terribly fast lens apeture-wise, but it seems to work well enough. I don't think you can get a better zoom lens for the price, so I can't knock it too much! Overall, you'd be wise to start off with a zoom like this one and work from there. It's a great starting block lens!

I got this lens as a gift back in 2002, I believe. It's a real work-horse.

It's very "plastic" compared to the more costly lenses, but that also keeps it very light. Because it's so light, I tend to lug it around more than I would if it were a more quality/heavy lens. So for the price, it gets the job done. Don't listen to the lens snobs that put it down. I've taked some outstanding photos with this lens, and yes... even at full zoom. And they talk about the poor build quality? False. Yes, it's plastic and cheap. But it's built well. Mine is over five years old and well traveled. Works perfectly!!!

UPDATE: today (Oct. 30, 2007) I tested this lens. I took photos of moving vehicles on an interestate and they came out crisp and clear at full zoom (200mm). I also took some photos of a cat outside, and they also turned out great at full zoom. For the cost of this lens, it can't be beat!!!

"You really do get what you pay for, but..." 2006-08-06

sometimes that cost can be overwhelming. I got this lens 10 years ago with my my Rebel G (film camera). I used this lens for about six months after getting my Digital Rebel. For the most part I was reasonably happy with my results. When stopped down to about f8 this lens can take some pretty good shots. About a year ago I bought Canon's 70-200mm f4L. When I go back and look at the shots taken with the two lens the difference is pretty dramatic. The 70-200 f4 shots tend (for the most part) to be very sharp with great contrast and color, while the 80-200 f4.5-5.6 tend to be pretty soft and drab. I would like to provided links to show the difference but Amazon does not allow it. Do a google for pbase and you can look at images from many different lenses.

In short, if you're just starting out, the EF 80-200 f4.5-5.6 is capable of taking some pretty good shots if you stop it down an f-stop or two. I give it 4 stars more for value then image quality. For 150.00-200.00 bucks you can get some pretty good shots with this lens, and when you learn more get better shots still. On the other hand, you also get what you pay for. Your better lenses have elements with special coatings (Canon uses synthetic Fluorite and other UD (ultra low dispersion) coatings that are quite costly but also provide color, contrast and sharpness that your plain standard optical glass cannot match. Plus they are built to much higher tolerances. If you get this lens you will probably be fairly happy with its results, but as you get more demanding you will probably upgrade if you become serious about photography. A good lens to learn the basics.

I bought this lens on the advice of the other reviewers, and I was not at all disappointed. This is a fantastic lens for what you pay. It is indeed a light light lens and it almost feels "cheap," but it functions great and takes great shots. When focusing manually, it doesn't feel as smooth as some other lenses. But you really can't go wrong with this lens.

I bought this lens because I have started getting into nature photography, particularly watching some nesting Swainson's Hawks. According to the pictures, this lens should get me right up to their nest. Well, it did get me a little closer, but nothing like the picture showed, and then when I put the pictures on my computer, all of the pictures were so overexposed you couldn't see what you were looking at. Don't waste your money on this lens.

It's actually a 500mm f/8 with a 2x teleconverter, bringing it to 1000mm f/16.

That said, it's a great prime lens and for the money I doubt you'll find a better value. You should definitely use it on a tripod; the smallest amount of handshake results in a much larger blurred image when using this lens either at 500 or 1000 (and it's noticeable TTL as well).

Terrific long shots during the day, good for the moon due its brightness.

This lens is cool to work with, it is a nice lens for shooters on a budget. Of course if you have the money then by all means spend it. The 2X adapter is GARBAGE. I could not get decent results with it no matter what I did so save the little extra $$ and skip that addition.

This is a catadioptric lens. That means that it is very similar to a reflex, or mirror, telescope, and that it mixes mirror elements with refractive elements. The light comes in the front of the lens, goes right to the back of the lens, where it hits a large (full lens circumference) concave mirror, which then focuses all that light more tightly back in the direction it came. In the middle of the business end of the lens is another mirror, which then sends the light down the center of the lens back toward the camera, where standard refractive optical elements further magnify and focus the incoming light prior to hitting the film or sensor. A lens of this type is not only similar to a reflector telescope, it can actually perform as one, and you can find eyepiece attachments for just that purpose.

One of the significant benefits of a catadioptric lens is that you get less chromatic aberration, and so with subjects like the moon, which you expect to be grey, you actually get a grey image. With a standard refractor telephoto, you're quite likely to get colored fringes on sharp bright/dark boundaries - this is an area where reflectors can and do excel, and this lens is no exception.

Here's why: Light bends when it crosses the boundary between materials of two different densities. With normal lenses, light goes from air, into the material of the lens, and back into the air. So it bends twice. But light of differing colors bends slightly differently, and so the more bending (also known as refraction) goes on, the more likely you are to see colored edges - typically at the blue or red end of the spectrum - or even both. But a reflector system is made with mirrored surfaces, and light doesn't enter these mirrors, it just bounces right off the mirror surface, and it bounces at the same angle no matter what color it is - hence, there is no difference in the path light of various colors follows. This is why a well made reflector system doesn't present chromatic aberration, or CA, which is just a fancy term for what I just described to you.

Something else to keep in mind is that the background blur, or bokeh, of a catadioptric lens is donut shaped, instead of spherical - this is because of the light blockage at the center of the lens by the second mirror. That in turn means that you won't be shooting many images with creative depth of field with this lens; either the subject matter is in focus and the rest, if anything, irrelevant to the shot, or you probably won't be happy. Shooting distant things with no foreground like the sky or scenery on the skyline? No problem. Try a portrait with out-of-focus point light sources... ouch. Donuts! Just a word to the wise.

This particular lens has a screw type fitting that is not, by itself, compatible with the Canon mount. Consequently, there is a screw-to-Canon adapter supplied as part of this kit as well.

The lens sports a 500mm focal length, so you're looking at about a 10x magnification at the rated f/8 fixed aperture. But the kit comes with a physically separate 2x magnification element, which effectively increases the focal length to 1000mm and about 20x magnification, although of course this cuts the amount of light considerably, raising the lens' effective f-stop and requiring either a slower shutter speed or a higher ASA to get the same relative exposure for any given scene.

You don't have to use the 2x adapter; you can attach the screw-to-Canon adapter directly to the Phoenix lens and use it as 500mm, f/8. The only downside to this is that it takes a physical act to change from one mode to the other, one that exposes both the camera and the lens to dust and other environmental gremlins. As the focal length is fixed, I strongly suggest you think carefully about what you're going to shoot before you shoot it so that you don't have to fool with switching the 2x adapter in and out in the field.

The quality of the 2x adapter - or at least, lets say the quality of photos taken with the 2x adapter attached to the Phoenix - is, in my opinion, unsatisfactory for any use. The Phoenix by itself seems fine, so I think we can safely point the finger at the 2x adapter.

The lens is manual focus, focusing is smooth and positive, which was a relief to me after purchasing a much more expensive lens ($500) recently and running into some unexpected and entirely unwelcome backlash problems. The focusing ring is broad and well textured, providing a positive grip that you'll be thankful for when you're trying to get that last little bit of focus accuracy. The Phoenix is a very, very sharp lens for the money and the focal length; when you get the focus exactly right, I think you'll be delighted with the degree of telescopic detail achieved. I know I am.

Although you do have to stand off from your subject a bit, this lens can also serve as a perfectly reasonable macro lens. With the 2x adapter, you can get 1.35 macro shots on a film camera, and with a digital camera that uses a c-size sensor, you add an additional 1.5x so you're really getting close to a 1:1 full macro at that point. Again, here is an area where the catadioptric lens ability to basically do away with chromatic aberration serves to get you a considerably better image overall, and the lens' overall sharpness contributes a lot (as long as the object has a very flat focal plane, of course.)

There is visible, though not particularly offensive, vignetting that occurs around the center of the image. Sometimes this can work for you; so much so that it is a common effect you can add in many image processing packages. But there are times you won't want it, and with this lens, that means using post-processing to remove it, not impossible, but not trivial, either.

The lens is moderately heavy at 360 grams (12.7 oz), and with the approximate one and half inch 2x doubling tube attached, it sticks out pretty far so there's some leverage working on you along with the weight. It isn't so much that a standard tripod is overwhelmed, but if you're going to be shooting hand-held (presumably with a lot of light!) this thing will get your wrists tired in short order, no question about it.

One thing about any fixed f-stop lens, and this lens being no exception, is that the depth of field is limited. There isn't much you can do about it. For instance, at a distance of 12 feet, the DOF of this lens is about 1/4 inch. This has a number of consequences. The obvious one is the type of subject matter you will want to shoot with this lens will be limited to that which has a relatively shallow depth of field compared to the distance you'll be shooting at. Another, perhaps not immediately obvious consequence is that focus adjustment requires you to take great care or you'll find the focal plane is not collinear with your subject matter. In my case, I'm using the lens with a Canon EOS 40D, which provides for a live LCD view which can zoom the FOV in for a 1:1 pixel (LCD:Sensor) view; this allows me to see precisely how well I'm focused (or not.) In this sense, this lens is very well-suited to my camera (or vice versa.) If you are limited to a TTL viewfinder, you may find that focusing this lens perfectly is quite challenging. The lack of backlash helps, but even so, a very slight rotation of the focusing ring does move the focal plane a considerable distance. No question about it, this is one of the tricky areas for this type of lens.

As a manual focus lens and a fixed f-stop lens, it doesn't really tell the camera anything about itself. Your aperture readout will probably show a clueless 0.0 value; don't worry about it too much. If you set the camera to aperture priority, the camera will set the shutter speed appropriately and you'll get a properly exposed image. Or you can use full manual and tweak till you find what you're looking for. Given that shutter speed affects the blur of motion in an image as well as the available exposure time, and ASA (if your camera provides for adjustable ASA) affects the exposure time and the graininess and noise of the image, it may take some experimentation before you find the optimum combination of ASA and shutter speed that works best for your particular camera. Modern digital cameras have such large megapixel counts that in many cases, you can reduce noise after the fact by trading in some resolution; for instance, if you have a 10 mp camera like my EOS 40D, you can cut the resolution by half in both dimensions (proportionally) and this results in the light values of four adjacent pixels being combined into one new one in a final 2.5 mp image, which will serve to average out a great deal of sensor noise - at the cost of some detail, of course. In the case of a not perfectly focused image, though, which I think you'll find you take quite often with this lens because the DOF is so limited, there is little down side to such a reduction in pixel dimensions - and remember, noise occurs in an image regardless of focus because it comes from the sensor, not the image.

The kit comes with several filters which need to be mounted internally; they're more for film cameras which have fewer options for easily managing light (for instance, they can't adjust ASA without actually changing a film cannister.) They're quite inconvenient as they mount inside the lens at the adapter end, and so I have not even tried to use them. Nor do I really see a huge need for them in my situation. The only exception is related to the fact that filters can increase contrast as they block out ranges of light which may be obliterating certain features by virtue (or lack thereof) its abundance. So your mileage may vary; the filters are there if you choose to use them.

Last but not least, the lens comes with all the caps you need to keep dust off it, as well as a handy soft bag you can use to protect the fine surface features. It's a typical soft bag and it won't serve to protect the lens if, for instance, you were so unfortunate as to drop it. For that, you need a camera bag. As with all lenses, this baby is delicate, and the very first thing you should invest in is a bag that will keep the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune from lodging in your lens collection.

In summary, there can be no question that this is a special purpose lens, but when you are shooting distant objects on the ground or in the sky, it really comes into its own. It is all metal, at least on the outside, and feels very solid and frankly, it also feels expensive. Given the price, which is more than reasonable, and the build quality, which in my opinion is quite high, I think almost anyone who likes to really experiment with different types of images should have this lens in their kit bag. I recommend it enthusiastically and with great cheer. I'm very happy to have it myself, and I'd immediately and without any question replace it with the same model if something unfortunate happened to mine.

You can't put 500mm of telephoto capability in your camera bag at anywhere near this price point using standard lens designs; if you are willing to put out more money, you can get a better result, no question about it, but this is still a terrific way to start with telephoto photography.

I have actually used this product and uploaded some pictures. I was trying to avoid buying a Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM Super Telephoto Lens for $7200 to $12,000 dollars!!!! I'm sure it's not as good as a 7200 dollar lens, but it's way cheaper. I have used this hand held with an IS lens, but it does way better with a tripod over long distances. I used this with a canon 70-200 mm f/2.8 L IS. The shutter speed in day light decreased from 1/4000 to 1/2000 at f/2.8. The only thing I don't like about this item is that my lens sometimes will not auto focus with the extender attached. Other than that, it's pretty good.

I'm going to state up front that I haven't used this 3x teleconverter. I have no idea whether it has acceptable optical quality or not. The idea of a 3x teleconverter sounds very promising and nifty, but there is a large tradeoff involved. If you use this teleconverter, the effective aperature of the lens you are using will go up be three stops. This makes for eight times less light entering the camera lens, resulting in shutter speeds that are eight times slower than the lens would achieve without this teleconverter.

Most long telephoto lenses need all the light they can get, even expensive, high end lenses with image stabilization do. If, say, your lens's maximum aperature is F4 without a teleconverter, it will become F11 with any 3x teleconverter. A fast F2.8 zoom would become an F8 zoom, and the long focal length will exaggerate any vibration of the camera or motion in a much more noticable manner (Most camera bodies will not autofocus with an F8 lens, although some will). If you use this lens with a very large aperature prime lens (F2 or better), autofocus will still work, and shutter speeds might be reasonable, but capturing action would still be a difficult ordeal.

Because of these limitations, I would strongly recommend against this for anyone that intends to shoot any action with it at all, a tripod is an absolute must, and it would be most useful for taking pictures of still objects on a bright day. A smaller 1.4x teleconverter would be much more appropriate to those shooting sports and in situations other than bright and sunny.

I got a really good deal on this lens when I bought it more than a month ago. I read the reviews at the time and there were mixed reports. I was buying this lens to replace the kit 70-300 lens that came with my camera. I wanted the IS and the USM drive. I have used the lens quite a bit over the past month and lately, I am experiencing some strange problems with it. I was using it over the weekend to take some telephoto pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge. The lens would focus on the bridge and then immedately go out of focus. I would try it again and it would go out of focus. I said the heck with this, turned off the AF and used the manual focus instead. I don't know what the lens was trying to focus on, but it wasn't the bridge. There have been times also that the AF would make a lot of noise trying to focus and finally would focus on what I was trying to get a photo of. I am not sure if there is something wrong with my lens or this is just a characteristic of this lens. I am looking at another lens to replace my 18-55 lens and would probably look at the Sigma 18-200 lens to cover a larger range. If this Canon lens keeps up its current ways, I may have to get rid of it and reuse my original telephoto lens.

I've had the opportunity to compare this lens to the newer 70-300mm IS, to Canon's fast focusing 100-300mm ring type USM lens and an L series lens.

These observations are based on use experience, not detailed testing. The 75-300mm IS lens is well made and the optics are better than many dealers admit. The optics and the IS stabilization produce photos that are excellent, when the lens is used properly. This lens is very effective at reducing the impact of camera shake on image stability. The lens is very sharp up past 200mm, and quite good all the way to 300mm.

There is some sharpness fall off at the edges of the lens in full zoom mode, wide open, but this is somewhat true on the excellent L series 70-200mm which does not extend to 300mm zooming. The lens has pretty good contrast.

The newer 70-300mm might have slightly better contrast in a few situations. Sharpness seems about the same at all settings with the 75-300mm. The newer lens does focus somewhat faster but both are much slower than ring style USM motor Canon lens such as the 100-300mm USM Canon lens and the L series lens. I found no difference in photos between the 100-300mm and the 75-300mm IS lens.

The new 70-300mm IS lens has a panning mode for the IS which improves the lens ability to stabilitize when you are sweeping the camera to track movement.

The L series lens is sharp, focuses very fast, has a stable front element that works well with polarizer filters. Note that this L series lens has less range the newer 70-300mm IS or my older 75-300mm IS lens.

Bottom line, if you own the 75-300mm IS lens, I would keep it. If you can buy the 75-300mm IS lens used at a reasonable discount from the newer lens, I would save my money, go with the 75-300mm IS and buy an excellent 50mm prime lens to use for portraits!

Buy the way, the 75-300mm IS was Canon's first commercial stabilized lens. The build quality of the lens reflects the importance of the product and their pride in offering it. Highly recommended for general use.

First off, this lens works wonderfully with Canon's 20D, 30D and 5D. The image stabilization gives the photographer a serious edge. In my experience, when the IS is active, I'm able to shoot at a much lower speed, without having any blurring. Throughout the range of the lens, image sharpness is excellent, although a little soft when you zoom near 300. Otherwise, from 75 to 280 aprox. image quality is astonishing. I have shot at weddings, sport events, low-light conditions and very in cold climate conditions and the lens performed flawlessly. The ability of focussing manually is a plus. Automatic focus is always accurate. Just a few times in more than 3000 shots has the lens slowed a bit when focusing, but I must say that the objets were moving. The weight of the lens is ok, not too heavy, construction seems according to Canon standards. When shooting in particular situations, the silent USM mechanism is really a welcome feature. Overall, a very nice lens for the serious and amateur photographer.

At 300mm this lens is VERY soft, it's hard to get a shot that looks like it's in focus. To do so, you need to shoot at about f/11, and then since there is little light available, you usually have to bump the ISO to 800 or 1600 just to get an acceptable shutter speed. Of course, the high ISO then introduces other artifacts. The focus is also dead slow and often doesn't lock on. This is a lens that I have constantly fought with. Don't upgrade to the new 70-300 IS either, as it's only marginally better.

Buy the 70-200 f/4L. It's a far superior lens!

"Good Lens But Not For What It's Advertised." 2009-08-03

The Skinny:

This lens is cheap. It is well built, feels smooth, but is really a telescope adapted to a camera. This is BAD JUJU (With a twist, read on!)

The Long:

When I first opened the box I was really impressed by the build quality. The machining of the barrel was perfect, as was the paint job. The objective lens was beautiful, and the secondary mirror mounting element was perfectly centered and machined. Everything reeked of professionalism and excellent quality control. The second thing to strike me is that the thing is really massive. It has an extremely large front element, and that strangeness is exacerbated by the secondary mirror mount smack dab in the middle. Upon investigating further I discovered 3 tiny screw in filters that were a .2 and .6 neutral density with a Skylight filter (color warming) These tiny filters screw into the back of the lens where it mounts to the camera, which can make it a real pain if you choose to change or remove one because you have to take off the T adapter first in order fit your fingers in there.

Why all these talk of primary and secondary mirrors? This lens is a Cassegrain reflector telescope. The light enters the front where it is bounced off a concave primary mirror at the rear to a secondary convex mirror at the front, which then travels through the hole in the center of the primary mirror in the rear into the cameras mirror box. Sounds fantastic right? Depends on your application. This configuration yields an incredibly small depth of field when dealing with things inside the hyperfocal distance. Basically anything inside the "infinity" setting has a small depth of field. Were talking almost macro small. 1 to 3 inches maximum. Very depressing unless you consider its true design, a telescope. More on that later.

My first "wildlife" trial shots were taken on a nice steady tripod with the 2 second shutter delay on. I consistently got blurred images due to "Mirror Slap" (The vibration of the mirror raising to expose the shutter) and this was only alleviated by using the mirror lock up and Live View, which is a pain for shooting wildlife to say the least. Secondly the tiny depth of field ruined all shots as the farther part of the subject rapidly blurred in a very unpleasant manner. So wildlife and sports photography are out for this lens.

However considering this lenses telescope construction prompted me to wait for nightfall and try taking some astronomical photos. I was incredibly pleased! At 500mm the moon fills most of the frame, and being beyond the hyperfocal distance the entire thing stayed crisp and sharp, again provided I used the mirror lock up.

Pros: Cheap, Well Constructed, Lightweight for 500mm, Short for 500mm

Cons: Limited Uses, f/8, Tripod (Must), Cable Release (Optional)

Notes: I would give it 2 stars were it not for its incredible build quality. I wish all my lenses were built to this standard!

If you want a 500mm lens, you can spend 4 figures on a Canon lens, or you can buy one of these for less than 1/10 the price. Obviously, you're going to get better results from the Canon, and if you want to sell your photos this is going to be useless. It hasn't got any bells or whistles, no autofocus, no image stabilization, so you're going to need a tripod too.

I would characterize the results from this lens as 'barely acceptable, sometimes'. But still, if you wanted to take professional style photos, you weren't going to get that from a $90 500mm lens.

I bought this lens when I first bought the camera. I did not know any better. It is a shame that good lens are so expensive, but after a year of using the camera, I think, it is best to wait until you can aford a better lense.

I am a beginner at photography, but without a stablizer built into the lens I cannot get a clearly focused photo without a tripod. Also without auto focus it is only good for still shots.

"O.K. BUT NEEDS DOCUMENTATION" 2007-10-14

The lens works well, but leaves a lot to the imagination with the camera it is used with. The fixed aperture does not have any documentation that might help with intuitive shutter speed settings.

The registration marks for the distance scale, also, is not on top of the lens after installing the adapter plate and there is no documentation in regard to how to align it with the top of the lens.

This was my first lens for my Rebel XTi. It was a great place for me to start. The quality is not the greatest, but that was okay for me because I was not sure how much I would get into photography (or if it would fall by the wayside like some other hobbies).

I've had it for almost a year now, and though I prefer my bigger lenses, it's nice to have this one for an average outing where I can fit a nice camera into a medium size purse. I've found it has gotten a little loose as time has gone on, but it still takes very nice pictures.

i'm not an expert on lenses, but I know what I like.The only fault I could I could find was, auto focus was just a tad slower than comparable canon or sigma lense.Optical quality seemd realy decent,very sharp clear imagaes no flare,well built for a inexpensive lens.F stops are 3.5 to 4.5 ,an average to lenses in this class.Just good value,and made in Japan,not that other place.

This lens is simply to die for. Yes, it's big, heavy and expensive, but it does the job incredibly well. If you've never shot with a super-tele the heft and reach take some getting used to at first but once you are comfortable with it be prepared for stunning images.

Hand holding isn't exactly a lot of fun. It's possible if you're not a 97lb. weakling, but not the best way to get quality shots. For sports shooters a monopod is almost manditory, and if you're a bird or nature photographer a good tripod at bare minumum and even a gimbal head are wise investments.

Buy it, use it, love it.

I debated between the Canon 500mm and 600mm and, finally, decided to go with the 500mm as it actually can be hand held for short periods of time if you are fairly strong and athletic. Long story short... this lens is about as good as it gets for wildlife photography. Amazing image quality, even with a 1.4 converter. I have recently made the jump from Canon back to Nikon primarily because of Canon's inconsistent flash metering (are you listening Canon??)... but the 500mm stays in my bag. Even though I'm switching over to Nikon gear for most of my portrait / event / landscape work, I will keep one Canon body just to shoot with the 500mm f/4.0... it's that good -even though it's a bit of hassle working with two different camera systems.

This is a magnificant lens! I'm still learning this beast, but I certainly don't regret buying it. With the 2X teleconverter on a sturdy tripod, it gives me an effective focal lengh of 1300mm (500 X 2 X 1.3 - conversion factor for the Canon 1D Mk III) - you'd have even more focal length with a camera with a larger conversion factor - 1.6 for cameras like the 30D, but in most instances that would be too much FL. With out the 2X TC, the AF is lightning fast, and even with it it's pretty fast. You only get the use of the center sensor with the 2X, so if you're working small subjects like humming birds, it works well to focus on the eye, lock focus and recompose. With a little practice, this lens will give you amazing sharpness. If you're a serious bird photographer, this will be your favorite super telephoto. It's lighter and cheaper than the 600 f/4 and you're only giving up 100mm. I've only been using this lens for a week, and I absolutely love it!

I am very limited on my picture taking knowledge, but bought the Canon EOS Rebel XTI and want more lenses. When I read what people have taken time to write in about I have to say I feel better educated before making a purchase and want to THANK all of you!

I take pictures at weddings. So, inside shots are a must and evening light for receptions. I bought the Canon Speed;ote 430EX flash and LOVE it. Easy to handle and not blinding everyone as I expected. Easy to put on and take off.

Then I bought the Opteka Bgrxt Grip and LOVE IT! The camera is small and yet with the addition I feel safe holding it in any position. I read where others had problems with it not being tight but my fit is perfect. I also like very much the battery storage allowing me to shoot without changing anything.

My next purchase.....lenses. I want to take outdoor shots of wildlife and notice the EF 100-400 mm constantly mentioned. I am going to bite the bullet and purchase this item soon.

PLEASE anyone out there reading my note, please suggest another lenes for weddings. The past wedding I used my new gadits and my pictures were better than the person hired to shoot the wedding. I have an eye for taking pictures but am not a smart cookie when it comes to knowing what lenses to use. The numbers, settings confuse me totally.

I bought this just to have some fun taking pics of people that will never pose for a shot. It feels a little flimsy in hand and I wish it came with some type of cover for the front glass. I'm always smudging that thing. I would have liked some type of case for it when it's not in use as lint gets on that mirror very easily. I guess you get what you pay for though, and it really is just for fun.

I do like that it came with an adapter ring so that you can use it with different size lenses.

I was impressed with the ability it gave me to take pictures as different angles. I shot some cool tree and cloud shots.

Overall that giant hole is a dead give away for any aspiring spies, but it is lots of fun to play with.

The product functions as promised. For a voyeur who isn't particular about the vignetting, it successfully captures photos which you might not dare attempt otherwise. It takes pictures at right angles to the direction of the camera and photographer. It swivels, so photos can even be taken straight up and down, as well as to either side. I enjoy "people-watching" in public as much as anyone, but unfortunately, the large hole in the side would likely be a dead giveaway. I experimented with cooperating family members to see what they thought, and they agreed that if I kept my hand over the hole and peeked through my fingers at the subject until he looked away, I might get away with it. I could quickly uncover the hole and take the picture when they weren't looking directly at me. But I wouldn't go after a fugitive from the law with that thing.

"Wonderful lens! You'll take it with you everywhere." 2008-11-08

I hesitated for weeks before buying this lens. It's expensive (only $1,000 or so cheaper than the wonderful 400mm 2.8 Canon lens), it's 4.0 instead of 2.8, it's not an L lens (since it uses the less common diffractive optics), and the user reviews of the early production lenses were mixed (the latter reviews are much better). However, I finally decided to buy because I needed a 400mm lens for a mix of sports and outdoors photos, and I knew that I would rarely use the much heavier and longer 400mm 2.8 lens. It is true that the 400mm 2.8 has photographic advantages over the 400mm 4.0 DO, but those don't mean anything if you don't have the lens with you when you need it!

In the month or so I've had the 400mm DO, I've taken it with me on trips--in planes, inside the cabin, with enough space for two camera bodies, and 24-70mm and 70-200mm zoom lenses--and I've shot sports handheld _exclusively_. The autofocus is very fast, the image quality is _astounding_, and I can only say good things about this lens. Perfect 10 for me!

This is an often maligned lens, due to its high cost and the lower contrast compared to regular lenses. Both are true and the latter is easily fixable in the digital workflow. The upside that no other lens can compete with is, that one can carry it for miles without undue strain, handhold for substantial periods of time, like waiting a few minutes for some wildlife to move into position, or for some sports action to happen. Obviously, there are even lighter 400mm lenses, but those have typically no image stabilization and a very small maximum aperture.

At this point for me, this is my one size fits all super telephoto lens. There are sharper lenses, longer lenses, faster lenses, etc. but this one can do almost everything, and do it good enough.

"The best 400mm lens to carry outback" 2006-11-14

This is my lens for handheld images of birds in flight. It's sharp and exhibits no color fringing or other chromatic aberration. By comparison, my Leitz 400mm f/6.8 Telyt shows a fair amount of color fringing outside the center region. To be fair, the Telyt is a much simpler design.

The Telyt does have higher contrast than the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS, but a levels layer in Photoshop can fix that.

The 400mm f/4 DO IS is much lighter than any 400mm f/4 lens with conventional optics. DO lenses have a diffraction element that compensates for the color dispersion of spherical lens elements. It also reduces optical complexity and size.

The f/4 speed makes autofocus faster, and allows even better isolation of subjects using narrow depth of field. While bigger and heavier than Canon's 400mm f/5.6L, the f/4 lens is light enough at 4.3 pounds that it's still easy to carry. I've used mine on hikes above 10,000 feet to photograph bighorn sheep.

IS definitely makes a difference handheld, and on a tripod below 1/125 second. Canon's 400mm f/5.6L is a non-stabilized lens.

I've taken some of my sharpest wildlife images with this lens - you can see every feather in some bird shots. Highly recommended if you can afford one.

I received this lens a few days ago and have taken more than 100 test shots using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 digital camera with a 12X optical zoom.

So far, the results have been spectacular. I am getting much sharper images than I have been able to get with a less expensive Bower and other macro lens attachment sets.

The working distance is under 3 inches (less than 70 mm), which means that I have to get the camera bit closer to subjects than they'd like. I usually shoot spiders and insects and they scare easily. In contrast, a Bower macro lens attachment set can give me working distances over 6 inches.

This macro lens attachment has a fixed magnification of 10X. With my Lumix, the field of view with this lens ranges from about 3-1/2 inches (65 mm) at 1X zoom to about 3/8 inches (9 mm) at 12X zoom with relatively little image degredation at 12X.

The field of view for the full Bower extension set with 12X zoom is about 13 mm, though I do not usually use this set with zooms above 6X due to severe image degredation. However, the Bower set allows me to shoot at much lower lower magnifications for wider fields of view.

Thus, I will still carry the Bower macro extension set for versatility but will use the Opteka whenever possible for better resolution.

It is adequate for what it is, which is a black piece of plastic. It screws positively on my EF-S 55-250mm IS lens, and blocks some of that contrast stealing extra light. I can't compare it to the Canon variety, but it seems pretty good to me. It neatly reverses for storage. It is slightly flexible, which allows it to fit into my camera bag nicely.

"Great buy (but be careful!)" 2008-11-20

Great little short lens for any use, but you can wreck the autofocus mechanism when installing the lens shade. This may also happen when removing it but seems more likely when putting it on. The problem is the force required to lock it in place or remove it exceeds what the engaged autofocus gear can handle (probably a plastic gear in there somewhere?). I almost ruined mine. In my case it seems somehow the gear(s?) was/were disengaged from one another when I first installed the shade. The camera no longer autofocused! I gently rotated the lens barrel back in the other direction and a slight click re-engaged the focusing gears. Mine is fine now, smooth, fast and quiet. So do your self a favor, the SOLUTION is to always switch to "M" = manual focus when installing, removing AND storing the shade back onto the lens front. All in all a great lil lens for a pretty niffty price.

I have used a number of Sigma lenses throughout the years and I have been quite satisfied. I have a 28 - 300mm lens that I used with my 35mm Canon A2e. A few years ago when I made the switch to digital, I called Sigma and for around $75, they converted the lens to work with my new digital equipment. I have 3 Sigma lenses that I use now. I have had the 18-50mm less than a year and it takes great photos, HOWEVER, when you twist the lens hood off and on the lens, it turns the focusing gear. Mine has stripped out and you can hear gears grinding as the camera tries to focus. Somehow it does still manage to focus but it is slower and quite noisy. I know it is only a matter of time before it stops working altogether. I have replaced this lens with another Sigma, but I chose a higher end model with internal focusing. The 18-50mm would be a great lens at a great price for the occasional user if much care is taken with the hood.

As you start to venture into the land of ultra-wide lenses, a lens hood becomes less and less meaningful in terms of image quality, but it's still nice to have one for the glare that it does manage to block, and for protection of the lens.

My only complaint about this lens is that it seems prone to rotating out of place, when used on the 20mm/2.8 lens. Just so long as you keep it in check, you should be fine, but more than one of my photographs has been ruined by this lens hood making a surprise cameo appearance.

this lens is one of my favorite it is great for landscapes but at the same time the autofocus is fast enough for me to be able to capture moving items as well. i have heard in other reports that the CA(chromatic aberation) can be seen around the edges of the image when using this lens but in thousands of images i have only noticed it a very few times.

Pros: Good zoom, it's the one that u want to have in your camera all time. Very Good Wide Angle. Awesome Image Stabilizer (I can take pictures up to 1/30 and they are very sharp)

Cons: In the borders have little shade sometimes (nothing that u can't correct on photoshop). Don't have a USM motor (standard motor sounds loud), but still pretty fast focusing.

Overall: This is a standard zoom lens, I'm not a professional photographer but I consider myself an Average type of photographer. I use a Rebel XSi and you can make a very good crops of the pictures because with this lenses zoom and the 12mp working together the results are awesome. Don't spec the quality of a Canon L lense but its really good one.

I don't regret for buying this lenses. I recommend this lenses for a normal photographer who like a good zooming, wideangle, lense lock, and the best Image Stabilizer which automatically detects when u're paning.

Note: Both of them are edited on Photoshop CS3 but just to saturate and sharp a little bit. Almost all my pictures are airplanes so always they're moving, and works perfectly. Have a Marry X-Mas
